What Are Core Web Vitals and Why Do They Matter?

Core Web Vitals measure how fast and stable your website feels. Here is what they mean and how to improve them.

Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to judge how good a page feels to visitors. They affect your search rankings and, more importantly, how many visitors stay on your website.

The three Core Web Vitals

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

LCP measures how long the main content of a page takes to appear. A good score is 2.5 seconds or less.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

INP measures how quickly the page responds when someone clicks, taps or types. A good score is 200 milliseconds or less.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

CLS measures how much the page moves around while it loads. A good score is 0.1 or less.

How to check your scores

You can test any page for free with Google PageSpeed Insights. Google Search Console also shows Core Web Vitals for your whole website.

Common fixes

  • Compress and resize large images, and use modern formats such as WebP.
  • Remove plugins and scripts you do not use.
  • Use caching and a content delivery network (CDN).
  • Set the width and height of images so the layout does not jump.
  • Choose good hosting with fast server response times.

If your website is slow, our performance team can run a full speed audit and fix the biggest problems first. Contact us to get started.
